The Christian church fathers demanded that the Jews accept the Christian faith. Refusal to obey caused religious fanaticism, persecution, and incitement of the population to protect themselves from the newcomers. Islam and its leaders, which emerged in the 7th century, were initially loyal to the Jews. But over time, this attitude has changed. In Al Andalus (Arabs' Spain) and North Africa, many Jews were forcibly converted to Islam. The Christian kings of Spain, who expelled the Arabs from Spain (Reconquista), in the 15th century set a condition for the Jews: "acceptance of the Christian faith or expulsion."
